What you will learn:

The most common response I see when people give dementia care advice to deal with "challenging behaviors" like wanting to drive, asking for a dead loved one, or trying to escape the home or care community is to lie to the person with dementia. This is often called Therapeutic Lying.

But there are many questions about the ethics, efficacy, and use of Therapeutic Lying in dementia care. Let's look at what the research actually says about Therapeutic Lying, what people living with dementia have to say about it, and what we consider when doing Montessori based dementia care.

What actually is Therapeutic Lying? (TL)

Hint: It's not telling a person with dementia that their car is in the shop in order to get them to stop driving.

What does the actual research on TL show us about the ethics and efficacy of using it?
The prerequisites you need to evaluate before even considering using Therapeutic Lying.
The questions you need to think about in regards to honoring capacity and informed consent.

It's a myth that most people with dementia do not have capacity to make decisions and can not have informed consent.
(This webinar is NOT legal advice. It is for educational and informational purposes only. All legal and medical decisions around capacity must be made with your persons lawyer and medical staff.)

How does Montessori dementia care handles these situations?

Learn the guiding principles we use in our Creative Connections in Dementia CareĀ® trauma-informed Montessori care program.  Do we even use TL?
