Creative Connections in Dementia Care® Professionals Course

Trauma informed, Montessori based dementia care for professionals

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand why challenging behaviors such as aggression, wandering, and refusals happen in dementia (hint- it's not "just dementia.")
  • Stop chasing and managing challenging behaviors all day by learn how to prevent the behaviors from happening using the Montessori principles.
  • Create a thriving care community (facility) where residents are engaged, happy, and exhibit far less "challenging behaviors."
  • Create a meaningful engagement plan that works, that residents (or clients) actually say "yes!" to, but that also does not totally overwhelm staff.
  • Learn how to communicate with people with dementia so that not only can you understand each other, but you can form deeper connections. 
  • Discover what trauma-informed care is and how it can help decrease challenging behaviors and increase calm and joy. 
  • Learn simple steps to implementing this type of care into your community or home care setting so that you can start to see results right away.
  • Challenge the Pathology Paradigm of dementia to see a new way of care that maintains dignity and allows people with dementia to have autonomy and maintain more independence. 

Course Details:

  • 12 week course with weekly 1 hour zoom calls the first 6 weeks and then live zoom calls every other week for the second 6 weeks. These will be held on Thursdays at 2pm cst starting Jan. 23, 2025. You are required to be live for at least 4 of the calls. Calls will be recorded to watch later. If this time is not doable for you, please shoot me an email before purchasing. Depending on enrollment we may be able to open another live call time. If you have a unique situation, please email me about possible accommodations.
  • Online self-paced videos and written learning content. (Content and course materials are available to you for 6 months from date of enrollment.)
  • Online community, similar to a Facebook page, for support throughout the course.
  • Practicum: You will work with (and need to find) either two individuals with dementia (who are NOT related to you) or one individual and one group of people with dementia of 3 or more people. You will receive feedback from me on your practicum work.
  • The course will cover trauma-informed Montessori based dementia care, with modules such as: “Why Montessori care works,” “ADL’s with less struggle,” “Creating engaging activities that work,” “How Montessori care decreases staff stress,” and more!
  • Scope of the course: Montessori dementia care is only non-medical care to support people with dementia. Any medical care such as medications for treating dementia or other illnesses, wound care, or skilled nursing is not covered in this course.
  • You will receive a "Creative Connections In Dementia Care® Guide" (CCDCG) certificate at the end of the course, provided you have completed the online learning, all of the practicum assignments, participated in live calls and in the community, and attended at least half of the live sessions and watched the recordings of sessions you missed. This certification does not certify you to teach the Creative Connections in Dementia Care® program.  

Important Information: 
You must know how to use Zoom and have a computer or other device on which you can use Zoom and log into an online course through the internet.

Registration opens Monday Jan. 6, course starts Jan. 20. with the onboarding call on Jan. 23 at 2pm cst. Calls are on Thursdays at 2pm cst and you must attend at least 4 of the live calls for certification.

All sales are final. There are no refunds. Course must be completed within a 14-week time frame, giving you two extra weeks past the course end date. (Extensions for emergencies can be discussed on a case-by-case basis, but are rare.)

Anyone who wants to learn how to provide Montessori based dementia care in a professional setting. If you work in a care community (facility,) home health, hospital, outpatient care, if you have your own business and work with people with dementia in any way, etc... If you are a family caregiver, we have a Care Partners House membership for you where you learn Montessori care and get support from us weekly. Family members are welcome to take this course, but the extra parts of the course about staff training, providing care in different organizational settings, etc.. may be more than you are looking for. 

You have 14 weeks to finish the course with all of the practicum and final feedback. This gives you two extra weeks. Extensions for emergencies may be made, but are rare.

No. You are not certified to teach the Creative Connections in Dementia Care style of Montessori dementia care. You are getting a certification that says you are certified in being a CCDC Guide to people with dementia. I like to be honest- Montessori is not trademarked. While this certification does not certify you to teach my form of Montessori dementia care or use my resources, that does not mean you can not teach or share about Montessori dementia care in your own way.

No. All of the video and written material in this course is copyright of Recourse Coaching, LLC and may not be copied, downloaded, screenshot, screen recorded, photographed, or coped or share in ANY way. There are ebooks and forms in this course which you can download and use for your own personal use. The course videos will be accessible to you for six months from your date of enrollment.

No. This is an individual certification. Each team member must enroll on their own. If you have a group of five or more people, please email info@recoursecoaching.com to talk about group pricing at a discounted rate per person. 

Not at this time. However, some professions will allow courses like this to be submitted for CEU's as we have live calls and a certificate. You are responsible for speaking with your governing body to see if this course can apply for CEU's for you. 

Rev. Katie Norris

Rev. Katie Norris, MDiv, is an AMI Montessori for Aging and Dementia Practitioner and has working in dementia care for 13 years. She was a live-in care partner for her mother who had Lewy Body Dementia and is now a long-distance care partner for her father who has Alzheimer's disease. She has spent the past 13 years helping teach families and healthcare professionals about dementia care. She was on the teaching staff for the AMI Practitioners program. Her book, Creative Connections in Dementia Care®, is based on the Montessori based program she ran by the same name in the non-profit she co-founded in 2011. 

She is also a OMA (Opening Minds Through Art) Facilitator, Certified Brain Health Coach, Fitness and Mobility Coach, and Z-Health Practitioner (neurology of movement.)
